Japanese Literature Series: The Pillow Book

Product Descriptions
The Pillow Book is a mid-Heian period essay by Sei Shonagon. This work includes sections on spring, summer, autumn, and winter. (Note: There is no section on "The Pleiades...").

Sei Shonagon's work chronicles her experiences as a court attendant while serving Emperor Ichijo's Empress, Teishi, in the form of a diary, ruiju (collective essays), and musings. It is characterized by many short Japanese stories, primarily written in hiragana. Written with a clear and keen sense, it explores aspects of life, nature, and various other subjects, making it a work that resonates with us today.
